The age barrier Individualized learning breaks through the age barrier . The gifted and the hard-working move through the syllabuses faster than others . Older pupils might be permitted to shorten their pre-university learning by one or more years . Through breaking away from the constraints of the age barrier , we would give practical recognition to the fact that the pupils' time is valuable . It ought not to be spent merely to accommodate slower learners . ( This is of special importance because of the three-year Army service in Israel . ) Socialization The individualization of learning and the breaking away from one's peer group raise complex new problems concerning the socialization function of the school . Would this function be lost , or weakened , through individualized learning ? A discussion of this question lies within the province of the psychologist and the sociologist . The call goes out to them to use their creative skills to tackle this problem . I would venture to put forward a few comments . bate and to do all this with intellectual integrity . In the end , the pupils and the students should learn how to learn . It is self-evident that in a learning system there will also be underachievers and slow learners but they will at least be given an opportunity to advance to the limits of their capabilities . Practical application As mentioned above , individualized learning has been in operation for about ten years . It was begun in small pilot projects but , by now , thousands of children learn successfully by this method . Up to now , the learning material has been prepared for the first seven grades in few subjects : reading comprehension , arithmetic , geometry , spelling and Bible . Individualized learning could be extended to cover more age groups and more subjects even up to the twelfth grade ( matriculation ) . The burden of these notes is to plead for such an extension over the next decade or two .
