Laboratory equipment Laboratory work lies at the heart of science studies . Most of the intermediate and secondary schools have their own science labo ratories . There are a few exceptions such as Beersheba where a , central laboratory serves several schools . Science teachers Perhaps the greatest single factor in stimulating students into seeking science careers is the enthusiastic and well informed high-school science teacher . ( R . L . Weber , Physics Today , March 1956 ) The teacher situation is particularly serious in physics because a large number of physics teachers did not obtain a B . Sc . degree in physics at a university or a diploma in a teacher training college . This group includes 30 per cent of all the physics teachers with ten years' experience or more ; their knowledge might well be out dated . It also includes 70 per cent of all the physics teachers with less than ten years' experience . The teacher problem in physics becomes especially critical by the time the pupils reach the 9 th grade ( age fifteen ) . Forty per cent of all the 9 th grade physics teachers have had no formal education in physics . Their field is mostly mathematics or biology . This is reflected in the diminishing number of pupils who take physics in the highest school grades and after matriculation . In 1983 , the to tal number of students studying to qualify as physics teachers in all the universities and all the teacher training colleges together was fifteen , and not all of those students will ultimately go into teaching . The teacher situation in chemistry seems to be more satisfactory than in physics , but there is a shortage of technical aids in the lab oratories . The number of students at the universities and teacher training colleges seeking to qualify as teachers in chemistry is about fifty per annum . About one-third of them are Israeli Arabs who plan to teach chemistry and biology . Compared to physics , the teacher problem is not unduly severe in biology . The students seeking to become teachers in biology number about 125 per annum ( 100 at universities and 25 at teacher training colleges ) .
