The Syrian government ' s opinion with respect to Mr Chamoun ' s plans is therefore that there is no need to hurry , and that he should be left to work . If he succeeds , we will be able to benefit from his success and if he fails , the consequences will not be attributed to us . What comes out of all this is that we need to convince Mr Abd al - Hamid Karameh to flatter Mr Chamoun and to support him , even by risking strengthening Riyad al - Sulh and his people . Riyad Bey no longer appears to enjoy the complete sympathy of our President of the Republic . This is because of his attitude with regard to Karameh and the anxieties he created for him in an unreasonable and undignified manner .
