This Book is Dedicated in Memory of Samuel D . Shechter ישראל דוד בן ברוך ז "ל Upon retirement Sam studied at Beit Morasha and shared the vision of its founder , Prof . Benjamin Ish - Shalom , that Jewish tradition demands comprehensive responsibility for the entire Jewish people . Sam was a thinker and a scholar , deeply interested in the critical study of the Bible and religious belief - the subject of this book .
