Ramos’s work focuses on two major media : video and painting ; in both of them she combines figures , terms , and themes from the fields of philosophy , Greek mythology , reality and imagination . Her recent videos feature an imaginary representation of a marine world , incorporating aquariums filled with water , sand , etc . to generate a sense of an undersea island where a new , artificial world transpires , reinforcing the inability to change human existence . The sense of freedom is important to any artist , all the more so to Cuban artists , who , for many years , felt imprisoned and isolated on their island . Ramos is well aware of the socio-political problems suffered by the Cubans . Her works are somewhat critical of Cuba’s isolation from the Western world , and particularly–from its close neighbor , the US . “ For me , " she says , “ making art is a way to communicate with all human beings and with the future . Through my work I try to express the significance of the world to which I belong . My work is a re ֳ ection about the specific reality of my country . I often employ my self-portrait as a way to muse over the fact of belonging to an island where collective history and personal destiny are tightly related" ; this is true , for example , of the etching Narcissus ( 2012 ) from the Mythological Series . ✦ Sandra Ramos , Narcissus , from The Mythological Series , 2012 , etching and aquatint , 50 ש 100 Sandra Ramos , A Conversation with Proteus , from The Mythological Series , 2012 , etching and aquatint , 50 ש 100
