rendered , as if each has a personality all its own . The apples , depicted over thick layers of paint , are arranged in a square structure of 10 rows and 10 columns . One hundred apples equally spaced , alluding to one of the most horrendous crimes committed by the occupying forces in World War II . Kirbiš carries the memory of the act , of which his parents told him when he was 10 . The ground of the painting serves as a surface of memory , history , the general and the personal past . The bloodcurdling incident happened after Slovenian partisans killed a German officer in a battle near Celje in 1945 . In February of that year German soldiers arrived in town , gathered one hundred local men and hanged them with wire from trees in an apple orchard in the valley between Celje and Maribor . Kirbiš was deeply in ֳ uenced by the story , which became the nightmare of his childhood . In 1960 , following a chance drive by the apple orchards in that valley , he experienced a vision and saw in his mind’s eye the men suspended from the trees . The scene returned to haunt him while residing in Berlin . In 1988 he first painted the red apples as a metaphor for that atrocity , and since then the apples in his works remained red and symbolic . Later he began exploring the theme of the Divine Comedy , which he added to his paintings on this theme , culminating in a large trilogy : The Divine Comedy Symphony ( 1993 ) , Ashes to Ashes ( 1994 ) , and Saudade ( 1997 ) . Leaving the studio , at the top of the stairway on the second ֳ oor , we stop to taste the cherries . The fruit is ripe , red , and ever so sweet .
