היסטוריונים כבר עמדו על כך שהפיתוי לראות בכיבוש ירושלים בדצמבר 1917 את הנקמה הסופית על מסעי הצלב הכושלים בימי הביניים היה גדול מכדי שבני התקופה הנוצרים יתעלמו 4 ממנו . מיד לאחר הכיבוש הופיעו בעיתונות הבריטית כתבות וציורים שדימו את אלנבי לריצ 'רד לב הארי וקישרו בין מסעי הצלב הקודמים למסע הנוכחי . ההקשר הדתי תרבותי התעצם לאחר המלחמה שעה שספרים על המערכה בארץ ישראל נשאו כותרים שחזרו על המילים ' צלבנים ' , ' מסעי צלב ' ו ' מלחמת יום הדין ' ותיעלו את קוראיהם לכרוך את מסע המלחמה עם העבר הנוצרי . 6 כותרים בעלי משמעות סמלית לא פחות חזרו על השם ' ירושלים ' במפורש . גם במחצית השנייה 7 של המאה העשרים עדיין המשיכו הספרים לפנות לעולם הדימויים התרבותי דתי הנוצרי . אלנבי היה לצלבן האולטימטיבי והמודרני , שהצליח במקום שקודמו נכשל וכבש מחדש את העיר 730 שנה לאחר שנפלה בידי המוסלמים . גם העובדה שלאחר כיבוש ירושלים עצר חיל המשלוח את תנופת התקדמותו וחידשה רק כעבור תשעה חודשים תרמה את חלקה להאדרת ההישג ולקיבועו בתודעה הציבורית שלאחר המלחמה . המתקפה הבריטית המכרעת , שהסתיימה בכיבושן המלא של ארץ ישראל ושל סוריה ובחתימה 2001 ; B .
