What do Teachers Mean when they Demand to be Recognized as a ‘ Pro- ? fession’ Uri Ellis Over the past decade there has been an insistent demand to turn teaching into a profession . This will hopefully allow teachers to improve working conditions , and to gain social recognition and status . The article analyzes segments of discussions which took place between officials of the Ministry of Education , representatives of the Teachers ’ Association , Israeli government and Knesset representatives in order to better understand the way teachers are represented and related to in the social discourse , and to examine their status and the meaning of the claim to gain recognition as professionals . This claim is analyzed using a psychoanalytic frame which views such claims as part of the drama of the relationship with the imagined ‘ other’ . This analysis reveals an underlying sense of deficiency which suggests that the claim should be seen in critical terms . In the final part of the article ,...  To the book
