Communities of Practice : Learning , Meaning and Identity Eteinne Wenger The conventional view of learning as a bounded , separate and individualized activity is challenged , and an alternative conception of learning as ongoing , informal and participationbased is advocated . The key product of learning is seen as meaning and significance derived from engagement with a community of learners , as opposed to the mere accumulation of knowledge . Therefore learning is important in the formation of one ' s identity . Communities of practice include a wide range of activities , ranging from hobby clubs to professional groupings , and are an integral part of our daily lives . This perspective focuses on the contexts within which this everyday , taken-for-granted and participatory learning occurs .
