To facilitate comprehension, I preferred plene spellings ( i . e . , spellings that include “vowel letters” ) where they are supported by at least some manuscript evidence, seeing that such choices are generally a product of scribal preferences . For quotations of the text of Genesis that stand at the beginning of each comment ( “lemmas” ) — concerning which scribes tend to take considerable liberties, such as truncation and ellipsis—I generally chose, following Finkelstein, to use the notably full formulations found in Manuscript JTS 2383 . I also drew heavily on Finkelstein’s work in identifying biblical and rabbinic references, even as I correct occasional errors .  To the book
