233 | PART THREE : READING STRATEGIES IN CONTEXT ABSTRACT . Writing - from - sources, or "discourse synthesis" ( DS ) , is a common but cognitively demanding reading - writing academic task requiring students to select, organize, and connect content from source texts as they compose their own new texts . The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of explicit instruction of DS strategies and metacognitive strategies on the subjects' DS processes and products ( Segev Miller, 2004 a : 5 ) . The purpose of the present study, then, was to investigate the effect of relevant strategy instruction on the subjects' DS processes and products . Underlying this purpose was also a concern for improving teachers' learning and quality of instruction .
