חוקרים השתמשו במונח " אוורגטיזם " כדי להסביר את מקומם של התורמים בעיר היוונית - רומית . בראון , בעקבות ויין , תיאר את הדברים כך : 9 הנדס , צדקה וסיוע , עמ ' . 91 וולף , " אוכל , עוני ופטרונות " , עמ ' , 211 - 210 מצטט את הנדס וכותב : " The poor were rarely singled out to receive gifts of money or of food .
