'Bahaa Makhoul and Elite Olshtain Language Development among Speakers of Arabic in a Multilingual Society is a collection of unique studies carried out in Israel by researchers from universities and colleges nationwide . A variety of approaches is presented throughout the collection , beginning with features of language at the kindergarten level , through elementary school , middle school , high - school , and finally adulthood . The main characteristic of speakers of Arabic in Israel is that they function throughout life in a multilingual context . They acquire the spoken variety of Palestinian Arabic at home and use it in their immediate environment , and they encounter Standard Arabic at school and in institutions of higher education , and use it for academic and occupational interactions .
