Paulo Freire , the founder of this school of education , taught reading and writing to poor , illiterate farmers in Brazil at a time when such activities were considered to be politically subversive , defying the existing social order . Knowledge of reading and writing was a prerequisite for voting . The influence of feminist thinkers opens new perspectives and creates a critical feminist pedagogy .
