Should halakhah ( Jewish religious law ) react to changes in the real world in which we live ? Many believe that , in contrast to legal systems created by human beings , whose successful implementation depends on their flexibility and ability to adapt to circumstances , halakhah – which originated in Divine revelation and is theological by nature – is independent of time or context . Those who hold this view insist that halakhah should not respond to changes in the human situation ; on the contrary , it orders the lives of all Jews in a fixed and predetermined way , wherever and whenever they live . In other words , halakhah should apply in the same way to the lives of Jews in the Diaspora and in Israel , in the Middle Ages as well as in the post - modern era , to a time when Jews are “ a free people in our land " no less to when they are persecuted and oppressed under foreign rule . As the title of this work , Jewish Law and Zionism , makes clear , our position is entirely different ....  To the book
