Halebi hazzanut , the cantorial and liturgical style of Jews from Aleppo , is an important part of Syrian Jewish life in Brooklyn , as an estimated 60 , 000 Syrian Jews in the Brooklyn and Deal ( Jersey Shore ) communities and over twenty - five synagogues follow the Halebi custom . An essential component of this tradition ( is following the maqamat , Arabic modes that guide the hazzan ( pl . hazzanim or cantor in the rendering of Shah arit ( the Morning Prayer ) . Halebi hazzanut provides a valuable case study for agency , memory , and continuity through music . My study of the Syrian community of Brooklyn began in 1991 when I attended synagogue services and studied with Syrian cantors . My study clearly demonstrated that specific individuals had a significant impact on the migration of Halebi hazzanut from Syria and that dedicated community members to this day perpetuate this tradition , preserving their heritage and the memory of their teachers and family .
