Introduction The religious changes that Mexico ’ s Halebi Jewish community has undergone over the past three decades can be attributed to national and international phenomena , in general , as well as to historical processes that have affected world Jewry , in particular . On a national level , the impact of Mexico ’ s socioeconomic crises ( which began in the seventies ) on the economic well - being of Jewish families must be analyzed . To what degree was religion used as a coping mechanism by many of them ? From an international perspective , the effect of globalization and its resulting economic and cultural openness should be examined . Did it lead to Mexico ’ s Halebi Jews questioning their group identity , which in turn led some to defensively return to their religious origins to combat the relativism rampant in the collective ?
