It is an important factor in healthy physical and emotional development , and instils a sense of pride , dignity and accomplishment . And for people with physical disabilities , competitive sports assume an even greater importance . When faced with a debilitating injury or progressive disease , people may withdraw into depression and feelings of worthlessness . Some feel their lives have ended .
