Nationalism and religion have both united and divided people for centuries . Nationalism is generally defined as a modern phenomenon , based on group sovereignty within a designated territory , while religion is typically seen as individual faith in the divine based on ancient precepts and moral values . Since they generate alternate visions of the communal ideal , nationalism and religion have at times been in conflict , but have also frequently had a symbiotic relationship . While most of the world’s major religions have , at one time or another , been tied to a variety of nationalist movements , this work asks : how does Judaism differ from other religions in its relationship with nationalism ? This chapter will examine this question through a comparative analysis of historical and cultural factors , as well as through an examination of the scriptures , holidays and prayers of Judaism and other religions .
